DevCon begins..

Here I am at 2.40am Pacific Time writing my first blog entry about DevCon 2005.

My flight from Sydney to San Francisco (subsequent to arriving in Sydney from Adelaide) was rather uneventful, thankfully.. other than the customary huge line up at immigration. Having said that, to CBP’s credit, the masses moved through rather smoothly.

This is my first time to San Francisco, so every step is a new adventure. It started with the fabulous rail system known as BART, which I had hoped was some reference to The Simpsons. What a cool dude that was calling the stations on my ride from the airport. He had a long southern drawl, and people couldn’t help but raise a smile every time his voice came over the loudspeaker.

On my way past Balboa Park (is that a Rocky reference? also not to be confused with Balboa Park in San Diego), I also noted “box” housing was prominent in the area. Rather fitting for an area of that name, eh?

I check in at The Maxwell Hotel and my room is adequate, but comfortable, with high-speed internet access, and only a short walk from the Hilton and DevCon.

Soon I arrive at the Hilton just in time for lunch between the tutorials. I was the first to be able to partake of the meat or veg lasagne, lettuce and croutons, steamed vegetables and garlic bread. It turned out to be a rather large lunch crowd in the end, much to my surprise, really.

Danny Thorpe had his tutorial just about filled to capacity. He was as accurate and knowledgeable as usual (hey, who am I to argue?), however one couldn’t help but wonder how many people will actually debug down to the dirty level that Danny does. Nevertheless, I learned some useful stuff from the tutorial.

Some of us (including fellow TeamB members Jeff Overcash and Mike Williams) then partook of dinner at Lori’s Diner, just around the corner from the Hilton. I recommend Lori’s if you’re keen on 50’s style burger dining.

I later branched out on my own, making a last minute decision to go and see Saw 2, and I wasn’t disappointed. I found it as suspenseful and gut wrenching as the first movie (Saw), and was pleased to see this movie also has a neat little twist in the end.

Time for bed, said zebedee… and it was.
