We use Interbase 2009 with a big database, it is over 25 GB and have the characterset to NONE.
I asked this question on StackOverflow with no reply yet, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3543003/how-to-change-characterset-of-an-existing-database-for-interbase

Is there really no way to change characterset of an existing database except from create a new one and moving all data ?

If you'd like Borland to add a new character set to InterBase, you need to add a request to QualityCentral:

http://qc.borland.com

You should make sure your request includes the ISO charset name, and the collations you need.

Note that IB 7.1 contains two new character sets useful for Eastern European applications: ISO-8859-2 and KOI8-R, with indictions in the release notes that more charsets will be added in the future.
